Maggie Vandewalle

Maggie Vandewalle was born and raised in Iowa City, Iowa. Through the encouragement of a high school art instructor, she applied for and received an art scholarship to the University of Iowa, where she worked towards a BFA in printmaking. After school she turned to watercolor, in part due to the high cost of printmaking equipment, but also because she wished to incorporate more color in her pieces.

For Maggie, painting is a way to tell stories without words, to blend reality with the fanciful. Running through all her work is an overwhelming compulsion for detail, be it a highly realistic landscape or one more loosely interpreted. The details are not gratuitous; they work to urge a person closer, to find the thread of the story, whether it be hers or one of the viewer’s own discovering.
